Fida International is helping people at the regions in
Southern Asia that have been most badly devastated by the
floods, ie. Bangladesh, India and Nepal. Since last week
drinking water, food, cooking utensils and covers have been
delivered to the area. In India the relief is targeted to
one of the poorest areas of the country, the state of Bihar
in the Northern part of India, which has suffered from the
flood very seriously.
"Children, older people and the sick, as well as animals,
are living at the same shelters built at road banks and high
points of terrain. The shelters are made of leaves and
pieces of plastic", describes Fida's aid worker Kari Harri
from Bihar.
The flooding has been over five metres at worst, with two
metres being a typical level. The rains are predicted to
continue throughout the next week, and therefore the
emergency in Southern Nepal and Nothern India will continue
and the people are scared.
"Help has been received with gratitude. For example, at an
area people hadn't got any food in four days", reports
Fida's aid worker Sami Kivisalo.
Harri and Kivisalo are working with local volunteers,
reaching flooded regions that are difficult to access. Fida
is one of the few aid organizations working in Bihar. Relief
action run by the government of India have started very
slowly. At Fida's working field much more help is needed
than it has been financially possible to deliver.
Up to this moment 300 families in Nepal and 700 families in
India have received aid from Fida. Actions to help 1,200
families in Northern, Central and Southwestern Bangladesh
are underway. Delivering of aid as well as coordinating work
is carried out by local long-term partners of Fida.
In Finland private donations are welcomed to help the flood
victims.
